Shelby Austin

Shelby Austin 1959-2024 (age 64) Shelby Springfield Austin, age 64, of Ridgewood, passed away unexpectedly at the McEntire Hospital on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 following a sudden illness. Shelby was born on May 12, 1959 in Jones County and was the youngest daughter of Arnold Raymond Springfield Sr., and the late Mattie Frances Springfield. She was a member of Oak Baptist Church for numerous years where she had sang in the choir. Shelby worked for several years in textiles.  In addition to her mother in 2024, she was preceded in death by her husband  Vince W. Scoggins in 2018.  In addition to her father, Shelby is survived by her sons, Douglas Austin and wife Miranda, and Colby Austin, her brothers, Ray Springfield and wife Mildred, and Stanley Springfield and wife Reba, her sister, Barbara Springfield Scott and husband Ronnie, grandchildren, Toby Austin, Morgan Austin, and Megan Austin, and a number of nieces and nephews. Phillip Mitchem

Phillip Mitchem 1942-2024 (age 81) Phillip "Phil" Wesley Mitchem, age 81, passed away at the McEntire Hospice House on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 following a battle with cancer. Phil was born on August 19, 1942 in Ridgewood to the late Wesley Mitchem and the late Austa Simmons Mitchem. He was a member of Zion's Grove Baptist Church and served as a deacon for a number of years. He worked for several years at AGA prior to retirement and was a graduate of Ridgewood High School. He loved his family & friends.  His wife, Darlene, his children, and grandchildren are left to cherish fond memories of Phil’s life.  Phil will be laid to rest during a Graveside Committal Service with Rev. Bobby Mason officiating on Friday, March 22, 2024 at 3:00 pm in the Ridgewood Community Cemetery. The family has entrusted the Ridgewood Mortuary and Crematory with the arrangements.   

Oswald Atkins Sr.

Oswald Atkins Sr. 1924-2024 (age 100) Oswald Atkins Sr., age 100, of Ridgewood, passed away at the Brookview Assisted Living Center on Monday, March 11, 2024 while under hospice care. Oswald was born on February 11, 1924 in Ridgewood, to the late Chip Atkins and the late Agatha Oswald Atkins. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was the longest standing member of Oak Baptist Church and faithfully attended until last March when he was placed in Assisted Living.  He also worked in a number of years at various Textile plants in the Jones County area. Oswald is survived by his son, Olswald Atkins Jr. (Bethany), of Jonesville, a daughter, Teresa Lovelace (Bill), of Ridgewood, grandchildren, Miranda Atkins Bailey (Andrew), Kristy Atkins Watson (Jeffrey), Catherine Lovelace Morrow (Scott), Stephen Lovelace (Rebecca), and numerous great-grandchildren.   Lucy McGuire 1955 - 2024 (age 68) Lucinda "Lucy" Evans McGuire, age 68, widow of Gene McGuire, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2024 at the McEntire Hospital. Lucy was born on May 8, 1955 in Brown County, to the late Bailey Evans and the late Joyce Harper Evans. She was a retired Teacher's Aid from Tate Middle School and was a graduate of Jonesville High School and later Jonesville Technical College. She had a special passion for children and adults with special needs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley "Gene" McGuire, and her sister, Allison Evans.  She is survived by her daughters, Stephanie M. Swann and husband Todd, Rachel M. Priscilla Yelton

Priscilla Yelton 1944 - 2024 (age 79) Priscilla Yelton, age 79, passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2024. Priscilla was born on April 2, 1944, in Jonesville, to the late Melvin and Cornelia Carpenter. She was a member of Damascus Baptist Church for several years until she later joined Carter Baptist Church. Priscilla worked for a number of years as a Beautician prior to her retirement.  She is survived by her husband, Kenny Yelton, her daughter, April Tillman (Chris), son, Todd Yelton, two grandsons, Nathan Tillman (Andrea), and Christian Tillman (Morgan), great-grandson, River Tillman, and her two sisters, Maisey Smith (Earl), and Luise Goforth. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Carpenter and his wife Barbie, and her brother-in-law, Bernie Goforth. A Graveside service at Carter Baptist Church will be conducted at 11:30 am on Tuesday, March 11, 2024 with Reverend Michael Taylor officiating.   Gene McGuire 1955 - 2024 (age 68) Stanley Eugene "Gene" McGuire, age 68, passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at the McEntire Hospital. Gene was born on April 8, 1955 in Jones County, to the late Houston McGuire and the late Avis Matheny McGuire. He was a teacher at Tate Middle School until his retirement in 2021. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School, Jonesville Technical College, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He was a faithful mason at the Jonesville Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Lucy Evans McGuire, his daughters, Stephanie M. Swann and husband Todd, Rachel M. Kodes and husband Brian, and Krystal McGuire, his grandchildren, Amber Wilson and husband Jake, Autumn Swann and fiance Cole Franks, Noah Kodes, and Nathan Kodes, brothers, Dennis McGuire and wife Pat, and Dale McGuire and wife Gina, and a number of nephews and nieces. Ruby Daniels

Ruby Daniels 1934 - 2024 (age 90) Ruby Faye Miller (Cobb) Daniels, age 90, died March 7, 2024 at the McEntire Hospice House. Ruby was born on February 11, 1934 in Jones County to the late Paul Miller and the late Peggy Heavener Miller. She attended Ridgewood School through the ninth grade and worked for many years in the Jones County Chamber of Commerce. Following her retirement, Ruby worked as an assistant at the Withers Mortuary. She enjoyed Sewing and attending the Jones County Senior Center Activities. She was of the baptist faith. She is survived by her daughter, Denise D. Melvin (Tim), step-sons, Dwayne Daniels (Jan), and Donnie Daniels (Karen), step-daughters, Sandy Humphries (Ray), and Carla McFarland, granddaughter, Brooklyn McFalls (Dustin), great-grandson, Tate McFalls, sister, Martha Butler (Elvis), 9 step-grandchildren, 16 step-great-grandchildren, and 2 step-great-great-grandchildren. Gladys Hoyle

Gladys Hoyle 1939-2024 (age 84) Gladys Frashier Hoyle, age 84, of Ridgewood, died at her residence on March 2, 2024 following a battle with dementia. Gladys was a homemaker, and faithful member of Ridgewood Community Church where she was a member of the choir, formerly the treasurer, superintendent of Sunday School, leader of the WMU, and a Sunday School teacher. Her church family prayed her through many of life's hardest times. She was born on April 1, 1939 in Ridgewood to the late Peter Frashier and the late Esta Lovelace Frashier.  Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hoyle, her daughter, Kimberly H. Marlowe, grandsons, Caden and David Marlowe, and sisters, Esther Lattimore and Grace Hanks. She is survived by her grandchildren, Joshua Marlowe and wife Alex, and Morgan Marlowe, her great-grandson, Mason Marlowe, and her son-in-law, Michael Marlowe.  A Visitation will be conducted from 4:00 pm until 6:30 pm on March 4, 2024 at the Ridgewood Mortuar
