Madge Freeman Vess Davenport, age 93, of Ridgewood, passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2023 at the Brookwillow Assisted Living Center, following a short illness. Madge was born on April 4, 1930, in Jonesville, to the late Arland and Virginia Freeman. Madge was a homemaker for most of her adult life, but was also a babysitter and seamstress from her home. She had once served as Miss Ridgewood and also the President of the Ridgewood Women’s Club.  She was a graduate of Ridgewood High School and a member of Cash Memorial Baptist Church. 

Madge is survived by her precious husband of 21 years, Oliver Hoyle Davenport;  her children, Max Vess Jr. (Darlene), Carl Vess (Janet), and Ellen Vess Carter (Jim); step-children, Darius Davenport (Carol), Steve Davenport (Dorine), and Alan Davenport (Pat); her grandchildren, Tripp Vess (Erica), Virginia Parker (Lee), Mary-Elizabeth Poole (Charlie), Alex Vess (Bethany), James Carter III (Sarah), and Mason Carter (Jayla); 12 step-grandchildren and their spouses; as well as a number of great-grandchildren, and step-great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandsons, Max Vess IV, and Bailey Carter. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Max Vess Sr. in 1993; her step-son, Rick Davenport and wife Kay Davenport both in 2023; her sisters, Eulene Bailey, Arlene Brown, and Ethel Camp; and brothers, Otis Freeman, Eugene Freeman, and Oscar Freeman. 

Services will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, May 21, 2023 at the Cash Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Jamie Stancil officiating. Burial will follow in the Eastern Hills Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Saturday, May 20, 2023 from 5-7:30 pm at the Ridgewood Mortuary & Crematory. The Ridgewood Mortuary & Crematory is assisting the family of Mrs. Madge Davenport. 

In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ridgewood Women’s Club, the Cash Memorial Baptist Church, or to the Brookwillow Assisted Living Center.
